Dr. Stechison has been both an educator and a practitioner of neurosurgery since 1989.

He has been an attending neurosurgeon at Gwinnett Medical Center since 2008. In May 2008, he joined Gwinnett Medical Center to found The Brain and Spine Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center to meet the growing need for comprehensive adult neurosurgical care.

He is particularly known for his microsurgical treatment of brain tumors, as well as trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and cranial nerve disorders. He also treats cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal disorders.

Dr. Stechison was born and educated in Toronto, Canada. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1981. He received his neurosurgical residency training at the University of Toronto as well as simultaneously obtaining a Ph.D. from the Dept. of Anatomy.

Dr. Stechison served as an academic neurosurgeon for six years starting at Ohio State University. He served on the neurosurgery faculty at Ohio State University as well as in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy. In 1993, he was invited by Dr. Peter Jannetta to join the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and the Neurosurgical Director of the Center for Cranial Skull Base Surgery. During that time, Dr. Stechison worked with a multidisciplinary team approach in pioneering efforts to make surgical resection possible for complex brain tumors that were previously considered inoperable. Many patients came from around the world for these brain tumor operations.

In 1995, Dr. Stechison left his career as an academic neurosurgeon and entered private practice. He rose to the challenge of setting up a neurosurgery program at a large hospital serving southwest Georgia where he served as the Chief of Neurosurgery service for nine years. In 2004, he returned to his urban roots, moved to Atlanta and founded Greater Atlanta Neurosurgery.

Presently, at the Brain and Spine Institute, Dr. Stechison continues to provide a full spectrum of adult neurosurgical services for disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves to regional as well as international patients.
